Hiroshima’s origins trace back to an early small fishing village on the shores of Hiroshima Bay. By the 12th century, the settlement had become relatively prosperous, with its economy linked to the Zen Buddhist temple Mitaki-dera. This early growth was supported in part by increased trade across Japan, carried out under the influence of the Taira clan. The village’s coastal location and expanding commerce helped lay the groundwork for the later development of Hiroshima into a major urban center.
