Company founding and original chatbot focus

Hugging Face was founded in 2016 by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf in New York City. At the time, the company’s original focus was building a chatbot app targeted at teenagers. The company was named after the 🤗 HUGGING FACE emoji. After open-sourcing the model behind its original chatbot, Hugging Face pivoted away from a chatbot-app focus and toward becoming a broader platform for machine learning. This shift set the stage for its later role in sharing and developing AI models and datasets, rather than concentrating on a single chatbot product.
