Memory is the mind’s faculty for encoding, storing, and retrieving information when it is needed; it also supports the retention of information over time so it can influence future actions. Without the ability to remember past events, language, relationships, and personal identity could not develop. Memory is often described as an information-processing system that includes sensory processing, short-term (working) memory for active encoding/retrieval, and long-term memory for longer-lasting storage. Memory contributes to identity by preserving experiences and knowledge that shape how a person understands themselves and the world. If memory fails—through forgetfulness, disorders such as amnesia, decay over time, or brain damage—identity-relevant continuity can be disrupted. Memory includes explicit (declarative) forms that involve conscious recall (such as semantic and episodic memory) and implicit (non-declarative) forms that operate without conscious awareness (such as procedural learning and priming). Overall, the accuracy and capacity of memory depend on how information is encoded, stored, and retrieved, as well as on factors like attention, brain integrity (e.g., the hippocampus), and the match between learning and retrieval cues.
