Memory is the mental faculty that allows people to encode, store, and retrieve information, making it essential for learning, decision-making, communication, relationships, language, and personal identity. By retaining experiences and knowledge, memory enables past events to influence present behavior and future actions. Without memory, individuals would struggle to develop a continuous sense of self or maintain meaningful social connections. Human memory operates through interacting systems, including sensory memory, short-term or working memory, and long-term memory. Long-term memory includes explicit forms, such as semantic and episodic memory, and implicit forms, such as procedural learning and priming. Memory depends on attention, meaningful encoding, retrieval cues, context, and brain processes involving structures such as the hippocampus. Although memory is highly adaptable and can last a lifetime, it is limited and can be affected by distraction, pain, aging, brain damage, decay, misinformation, and inaccurate retrieval.
