Human rights are moral principles and standards of behavior that belong to every person simply because they are human. They are inherent, universal, and inalienable, meaning they cannot legitimately be taken away. Human rights protect human dignity, freedom, equality, and justice and include civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, such as the rights to life, liberty, freedom of expression, education, and protection from slavery and torture. Although ideas resembling human rights existed in earlier religious, philosophical, and legal traditions, the modern concept developed strongly after the atrocities of World War II and the Holocaust. The adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations in 1948 established a global framework for protecting these rights and influenced later international treaties and national laws. Human rights are regarded as interdependent and indivisible, but debates continue about their enforcement, priority, and application across different cultural and political contexts.
