The International Space Station (ISS) is a permanently crewed research facility in low Earth orbit, operated through cooperation among NASA, Roscosmos, ESA, JAXA, and CSA. Its primary purpose is to provide a long-term microgravity laboratory where astronauts and scientists can study biology, human health, physics, materials, astronomy, Earth science, and the effects of the space environment. The station also supports technology testing, spacecraft operations, and research needed for future missions to the Moon, Mars, and other destinations. The ISS is significant because it is the largest human-made spacecraft and the first major space station built, maintained, and continuously occupied through extensive international cooperation. Since November 2000, it has enabled the longest continuous human presence in space, provided valuable knowledge about long-duration spaceflight, and served as a platform for education, commercial research, diplomatic engagement, and cultural outreach. Its partnership model demonstrates how countries can combine resources and expertise to achieve complex goals in space.
