The International Space Station (ISS) is a modular space station in low Earth orbit, built and operated through international cooperation by five partner agencies: NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), ESA (Europe), JAXA (Japan), and CSA (Canada). It was created by combining earlier national station concepts and has been continuously inhabited since November 2000, making it the longest-running human presence in space. The ISS’s purpose is to serve as a research platform in microgravity and to study the space environment. It supports scientific experiments, including work that benefits from weightlessness, and it also functions as a staging and operational base for human spaceflight. Over time, its mission expanded beyond pure research to include commercial, diplomatic, and educational roles, supporting outreach and international collaboration.
