Internet terminology and capitalization

Internet terminology often distinguishes between the lowercase “internet” (any network of networks) and the capitalized “Internet” (the global system of interconnected computer networks). The term “Internet” originated as a shorthand for “internetwork” and is now most commonly used to mean the worldwide network, though capitalization can vary by style and context. Capitalization guidance has shifted over time. While “Internet” may be capitalized as a proper noun, many style guides increasingly recommend using lowercase “internet” in all cases, especially to avoid treating it as a unique proper name. Confusion also arises because people frequently use “Internet” and “World Wide Web (WWW)” interchangeably, even though the Web is only one service running on the broader Internet.
