The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to physical objects embedded with sensors, processing capability, software, and other technologies that connect to and exchange data with other devices and systems over the Internet or other communication networks. The scope of IoT spans multiple engineering fields, especially electronics, communications, and computer science, and it is enabled by technologies such as embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, control systems, and automation. Although the name “Internet of things” can be misleading—because many devices do not need to be connected to the public Internet—they do need network connectivity and individual addressability. IoT has evolved through the convergence of ubiquitous computing, sensors, embedded systems, and machine learning, and it is applied across consumer, business, and industrial domains, with major real-world use cases including smart home products, asset tracking and fleet management, industrial monitoring, smart metering, and connected healthcare.
