SQL (Structured Query Language) is a standard language used to access and manipulate databases. It enables you to run queries to retrieve data and to perform common data operations such as inserting, updating, and deleting records. SQL can also manage database structures by creating databases and tables, defining views, and setting permissions. Although SQL is standardized by ANSI (1986) and ISO (1987), different database systems implement different SQL “versions” and may add proprietary extensions. To use SQL effectively, you typically work with an RDBMS (Relational Database Management System), which stores data in tables made up of columns (vertical attributes) and rows/records (individual entries).

SQL, or Structured Query Language, is a standard language for accessing and manipulating relational databases. It became an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard in 1986 and an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard in 1987. SQL supports common operations such as querying, inserting, updating, deleting, and managing database objects. Although SQL is standardized, different database systems—including MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, IBM DB2, and Microsoft Access—implement different versions and often add proprietary extensions. ANSI- and ISO-compliant systems generally support major commands such as SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, and WHERE in similar ways, but syntax, functions, and advanced features may vary between products.
