Java origins and project naming history

James Gosling, along with colleagues at Sun Microsystems, started the Java language project in June 1991. The project’s early name was “Oak,” inspired by an oak tree outside Gosling’s office. As the work evolved, the project was later called “Green,” before being finally renamed “Java.”
