ChatGPT’s core purpose is to act as a generative AI chatbot that responds to user requests by producing human-like outputs (text, and in some cases speech and images). Users interact with it through conversations where their inputs are called prompts; these prompts guide what the model generates and can be provided as text, audio, or images. The system is designed to handle a wide range of tasks such as answering questions, writing and debugging code, summarizing content, translating, and simulating interactive environments. Interaction is prompt-driven: the quality and framing of the prompt strongly influence the result. ChatGPT can also support optional capabilities that affect interaction, such as a Memory feature (to remember specific user-provided information) and the ability to recall past conversations. Beyond basic prompting, users can extend functionality via GPTs and plugins (including web browsing and code interpretation), and newer features like “Deep Research” generate longer reports based on extensive web searches. Overall, prompts are the primary interface for directing the model’s behavior, while added tools and features expand what the model can do in response.
