5G is the fifth generation of cellular network technology and the successor to 4G. In commercial use, it mainly refers to mobile networks built on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) 5G system and its New Radio (NR) air interface, first specified in 3GPP Release 15. 5G was developed to meet the ITUβs IMT-2020 framework for fifth-generation mobile systems, aiming to deliver much higher performance and support for new communication needs. The purpose of 5G is to improve speed, capacity, and responsiveness while enabling flexible network management. Compared with 4G, it is designed for higher data rates, greater network capacity, lower latency, better support for dense device deployments, and more adaptable core-network features. 5G networks can be deployed using different spectrum ranges (low, mid, and high bands) and different architectures (non-standalone mode using existing LTE cores, or standalone mode with a dedicated 5G Core). 5G also supports capabilities such as network slicing and edge computing, enabling services like enhanced mobile broadband, ultra-reliable low-latency communications, and massive machine-type communications for applications ranging from consumer connectivity to industrial automation and public services.
