The Turing test was proposed by Alan Turing as a practical way to address the question “Can machines think?” by replacing it with a clearer criterion: whether a machine can imitate human behavior in an interactive dialogue well enough that an evaluator cannot reliably distinguish it from a human. In the modern verbal version, a human judge reads a text transcript of a conversation between a human and a machine; the machine “passes” if the judge cannot reliably tell which participant is the machine, and the outcome depends on indistinguishability of responses rather than on whether the machine answers questions “correctly.” The indistinguishability criterion generalizes beyond purely verbal performance: since the test is fundamentally about matching human performance capacity, it can be extended to nonverbal abilities (e.g., robotic behavior) as well. Thus, the test is best understood as a measure of performance indistinguishability under interrogation—how closely the machine’s behavior resembles that of a human from the evaluator’s perspective—rather than as a direct measurement of internal mental states such as consciousness.
