Linux definition as Unix-like kernel-based OS family

Linux is a family of Unix-like operating systems that are based on the Linux kernel. As a Unix-like OS family, Linux follows many of the architectural and standards-based ideas associated with Unix (such as POSIX compatibility), while using the Linux kernel as its core. In practice, “Linux” often refers to complete operating systems packaged as distributions (distros). A typical Linux distribution combines the Linux kernel with supporting system software and libraries (commonly from projects like GNU and others) to provide a full, usable OS. Not every Linux-based system is necessarily treated as a distribution—for example, Android is Linux-kernel-based but is generally not categorized as a traditional distro.
