The lymphatic system is an organ system in vertebrates that complements the circulatory system and supports immune defense. It consists of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, lymphoid organs and tissues, and the circulating lymph. Unlike the circulatory system (a closed system), the lymphatic system is open: interstitial fluid leaks from blood capillaries into tissues, becomes lymph, and is then drained through lymphatic vessels. Lymph is similar to blood plasma but contains waste products, cellular debris, bacteria, and proteins, with lymphocytes as the main immune cells. Key components include primary lymphoid organs (central sites where lymphocytes are generated and early selected) and secondary lymphoid organs (peripheral sites where mature lymphocytes encounter antigens and initiate adaptive immune responses). Primary organs include the red bone marrow and thymus: bone marrow produces B cells and T-cell precursors, while the thymus matures T cells through positive and negative selection to establish immunocompetence and central tolerance. Secondary organs include lymph nodes and the spleen: lymph nodes filter lymph as it passes through, and the spleen removes aged blood cells and pathogens while supporting immune functions. The system also includes tertiary lymphoid organs—abnormal lymph node-like structures that form during chronic inflammation—and other lymphoid tissues such as mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). Lymphatic vessels (from lymph capillaries to larger ducts like the thoracic duct and right lymphatic duct) transport lymph back to the bloodstream, aided by muscle contractions and, in some vertebrates, a lymph heart.
