Mendelian inheritance (also called Mendelism) is a type of biological inheritance based on the principles proposed by Gregor Mendel in 1865–1866. Its core idea is that inheritance is strongly tied to individual genes, with offspring traits determined by the alleles inherited from parents. Mendel’s work was later re-discovered in 1900 and became central to classical genetics, especially after being integrated with the chromosome theory of inheritance. Mendel’s key principles explain how alleles behave during reproduction: dominant alleles can mask recessive ones in heterozygotes, alleles separate during gamete formation (segregation), and alleles for different traits can be assorted independently when gametes are produced (independent assortment). These rules allow predictable genotype and phenotype ratios in offspring, often described using tools like Punnett squares and pedigrees. While many traits follow Mendelian patterns (single-locus, dominant/recessive alleles), Mendel also warned that not all traits are Mendelian; many show non-Mendelian inheritance due to factors like multiple genes, multiple alleles, or other complexities.
