Mesopotamia definition and regional scope

Mesopotamia is a historical region of West Asia located within the Tigris–Euphrates river system in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent. It corresponds roughly to the territory of modern Iraq, with the region transitioning beyond into southwestern Iran (the Persian plateau). The name Mesopotamia comes from Ancient Greek meaning “land between rivers,” referring to the area between the Euphrates and the Tigris. In terms of regional scope, Mesopotamia is often defined broadly as the lands between the Euphrates and Tigris, and in wider usage it can also include neighboring steppe areas west of the Euphrates and parts of the Zagros region. It is commonly divided into Upper (Northern/Jazira) and Lower (Southern) Mesopotamia: Upper Mesopotamia runs from the river sources down to Baghdad, while Lower Mesopotamia runs from Baghdad to the Persian Gulf and includes Kuwait and parts of western Iran. In broader historical usage, Mesopotamia may also include parts of present-day Iran (southwest), Turkey (southeast), Syria (northeast), and Kuwait.
