From Earth, the Milky Way appears as a hazy, milky band of light arching across the night sky. This glow is not a single object but the combined light of countless stars located in the galaxy’s spiral arms, which are so distant that individual stars cannot be resolved by the naked eye. The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy. The Solar System lies about 27,000 light-years from the Galactic Center, near the inner edge of the Orion Arm, so observers on Earth view the galaxy from within its disk. As a result, the densest star regions toward the Galactic Center contribute strongly to the brightest part of the band, while the overall thickness of the disk (and the presence of additional structures like a bulge and bar) influences how the band looks from different directions.
