Muscle is a specialized soft tissue that enables movement through contraction and relaxation. In vertebrates, it is classified into three main muscle tissue types: skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle. All muscle tissues use the interaction of actin and myosin to generate force, with additional regulatory proteins such as troponin and tropomyosin. Muscle develops during embryonic development through myogenesis, where muscle progenitor cells (myoblasts) form muscle cells. Skeletal muscle is striated and typically voluntary, anchored to bones by tendons or aponeuroses, and is responsible for body movement and posture. Smooth muscle is non-striated and involuntary, found in the walls of many organs and hollow structures (e.g., gastrointestinal tract, blood vessels, uterus), where it supports functions like transport and sealing of passages. Cardiac muscle is also striated but involuntary, located in the myocardium of the heart, and contracts rhythmically under autonomic control to propel blood. The three types differ in structure (e.g., presence/absence of sarcomeres and branching patterns) and in how they are activated (nerve-driven vs pacemaker-driven).
