Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, their functions, development, disorders, and capacity for change. Its scope extends across multiple levels of analysis, from molecules, genes, and individual neurons to neural circuits, brain systems, cognition, behavior, and consciousness. Modern neuroscience uses techniques such as microscopy, electrophysiology, genetics, neuroimaging, computational modeling, and brain stimulation to investigate how the nervous system is structured and how it produces perception, learning, memory, emotion, movement, and decision-making. Neuroscience is inherently interdisciplinary, integrating anatomy, physiology, molecular and cellular biology, developmental biology, psychology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, and medicine. Its subfields include molecular and cellular neuroscience, systems and computational neuroscience, cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, neuroendocrinology, neuroimmunology, neuroethology, and clinical neuroscience. These connections have also produced applied fields such as neuroeconomics, neuroeducation, neuroethics, neurolaw, neural engineering, and neuromorphic computing, while medical specialties such as neurology, psychiatry, neurosurgery, and neuroradiology apply neuroscientific knowledge to nervous-system disorders.
