Perception is the identification, interpretation, and organization of sensory information so that an individual can represent and understand the environment. It begins with a distal stimulus (the real-world object) that stimulates sensory organs through physical processes (e.g., light, sound). Sensory organs transduce this energy into neural activity (the proximal stimulus), which the brain processes to create a percept. Perception is therefore not merely passive reception: it is shaped by learning, memory, expectations, and attention, and it depends on complex nervous-system processing that typically occurs outside conscious awareness. The scope of perception includes how sensory modalities (such as vision, hearing, touch, taste, and smell) are transformed into higher-level information (e.g., extracting shapes for object recognition). Perceptual systems also actively resolve ambiguity: the same stimulus can yield different percepts (multistable perception), and context can alter perceived qualities (contrast effects). In addition, perception can be studied through multiple frameworks—such as direct/information-based accounts (e.g., Gibson), perception as tightly linked to action (perception-in-action), and theories emphasizing evolutionary function (perception guiding action rather than simply producing knowledge).
