Platelets (thrombocytes) are blood components that help stop bleeding by reacting to vessel injury. In mammals, they are small, anucleate cytoplasmic fragments derived from megakaryocytes in bone marrow (and also lung tissue). After entering circulation, platelets clump to form a blood clot by responding to damaged endothelium. Mammalian platelet function centers on hemostasis, which occurs in coordinated steps: adhesion (platelets attach to exposed subendothelial structures such as collagen via von Willebrand factor), activation (platelets change shape, turn on receptors, and release chemical messengers from granules), and aggregation (activated platelets connect to each other through receptor bridges, especially GPIIb/IIIa, forming a primary platelet plug). Platelet activation also supports secondary hemostasis by facilitating the coagulation cascade, leading to fibrin deposition and stabilization of the clot. Beyond clotting, platelets participate in immune responses (innate and adaptive), including inflammation and immunothrombosis, and they release cytokines and growth factors that promote wound healing and tissue regeneration.
