A printing press is a machine that transfers ink onto materials such as paper or cloth by applying pressure to an inked surface. It represented a major advance over earlier hand methods where ink was applied to a surface and then rubbed onto paper, because it enabled faster, more consistent reproduction of texts. The printing press’s purpose is to mass-produce written material—especially books—by repeatedly printing from prepared type or plates. Invented in Europe around 1440 by Johannes Gutenberg through the development of movable type and related innovations, it helped trigger the “Printing Revolution.” Its global spread transformed early modern communication by making books cheaper and more widely available, accelerating the circulation of information across borders, and supporting major cultural and scientific changes.
