A printing press is a machine that transfers ink onto materials such as paper or cloth by applying pressure to an inked surface. It was a major improvement over earlier methods where ink was applied to a surface and the paper was rubbed by hand to transfer the image. Its purpose is to enable faster, repeatable, and scalable production of printed texts. Around 1440, Johannes Gutenberg developed a practical system for mass-producing movable type, which helped launch the “Printing Revolution” in Europe. This transformation made books and other printed materials cheaper and more widely available, accelerating mass communication and reshaping early modern society by supporting broader information flow, religious reform, and scientific exchange.
