QR codes (quick-response codes) were invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara of Denso Wave in Japan. Their original purpose was practical and industrial: to help track the types and quantities of automobile parts by replacing many individually scanned barcode labels on parts boxes with a single label that could store all the needed identification data. The design uses a square matrix of black and white modules with fiducial markers at the corners so imaging devices (like cameras) can reliably locate and read the code. Data is extracted from the horizontal and vertical patterns and protected with Reed–Solomon error correction so the code can still be interpreted even if parts of it are damaged or obscured.
