QR codes (quick-response codes) were invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara at Denso Wave in Japan. Their original purpose was to label and track automobile parts more efficiently than individually scanned barcode labels on each box, by consolidating the data from multiple labels into a single code. The design uses a square grid of black and white modules with fiducial markers at the corners so imaging devices (like cameras) can locate and read the code. Data is extracted from patterns in both horizontal and vertical components and protected with Reed–Solomon error correction to maintain readability even if the code is partially damaged.
