Refraction is the redirection of a wave when it passes from one medium to another. The change in direction occurs because the wave’s speed changes in the new medium (and/or because the medium itself changes), causing the wavefronts to compress or expand at the boundary. For light, refraction is most commonly observed, but it also occurs for other waves such as sound and water waves.
