A ribosome is a ribonucleoprotein particle found in all cells that synthesizes proteins by translating genetic information carried by messenger RNA (mRNA). During translation, ribosomes decode successive mRNA codons and, with the help of transfer RNA (tRNA), link amino acids into a growing polypeptide chain. Each ribosome consists of a small and a large subunit made from ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and many ribosomal proteins, and ribosomes assemble through ribosome biogenesis involving rRNA synthesis/processing and protein assembly into functional subunits. Core to protein synthesis, ribosomes convert the nucleotide sequence of mRNA into an amino-acid sequence, producing a polypeptide that can later fold into a functional three-dimensional protein. Translation proceeds through stages such as initiation, elongation, termination, and ribosome recycling; stop codons signal completion because no tRNAs recognize them. Functionally, ribosomes act as catalysts for forming peptide bonds (peptidyl transfer) and related reactions, with catalytic activity primarily carried out by rRNA (ribozymes), while ribosomal proteins mainly stabilize structure and support the process. Ribosomes exist in different forms across life (bacteria, archaea, eukaryotes) and also in eukaryotic organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplasts, reflecting evolutionary relationships and enabling selective antibiotic targeting.
