Rust is a general-purpose programming language designed to combine the performance and low-level control of languages such as C and C++ with strong guarantees for memory safety and concurrency. Its core goals include fast execution, efficient resource use, type safety, reliable parallel programming, and prevention of common errors such as dangling pointers, invalid memory access, and data races. Rust achieves these goals without relying on a conventional garbage collector. Its ownership, borrowing, and lifetime systems enforce safe memory management at compile time through the borrow checker, while still allowing deterministic resource cleanup and predictable performance. The language also incorporates functional-programming concepts such as immutability, pattern matching, algebraic data types, and higher-order functions, alongside structs, enums, traits, and methods rather than class-based inheritance.
