Self-driving car overview and lack of standard definition

A self-driving car (also called an autonomous or driverless car) is a vehicle capable of operating with reduced or no human input on public roads. It is often marketed in different ways, and the article notes that “self-driving” does not have an agreed standard definition. As a result, what different companies claim as self-driving can vary widely, depending on the operational design domain (ODD) and the system’s actual responsibilities. The lack of a standard definition is addressed through multiple classification and terminology frameworks. SAE International’s J3016 defines automation levels (0 through 5) based largely on the driver’s role and the system’s responsibility for direction and speed, while Mobileye uses a “hands-on/off, eyes-on/off, no driver” style taxonomy. Other definitions (including British legal and regulatory approaches) also differ in how they describe “driving itself,” “autonomous,” and what monitoring or intervention is required. Because these frameworks emphasize different aspects—such as driver responsibility, legal control, or marketing language—claims of “full autonomy” may not correspond to a universally understood capability.
