SpaceX was founded in 2002 with explicit founding goals centered on reducing the cost of spaceflight, improving reliability of access to space for ordinary people, and ultimately enabling colonization of Mars. From the start, Elon Musk’s approach emphasized vertical integration, the use of inexpensive commercial off-the-shelf components where possible, and a modular, software-like engineering mindset to drive down launch costs and speed development. Early execution of these goals included developing the Falcon 1 using internal funding, then leveraging NASA programs to accelerate larger systems. After early failures nearly threatened the company, SpaceX’s first successful Falcon 1 launch in 2008 and subsequent NASA Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) and Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contracts provided both credibility and financial support. This funding and milestone-driven development helped SpaceX scale to Falcon 9 and begin pursuing reusability, a core cost-reduction strategy that later produced successful orbital-class booster landings and reflights.
