Founding goals and early vertical integration

SpaceX was founded in 2002 with the goal of making spaceflight cheaper, more reliable for ordinary people, and ultimately enabling human colonization of Mars. From the start, Elon Musk emphasized vertical integration—building many key components in-house—and using inexpensive commercial off-the-shelf parts when possible. He also applied a modular, software-like development approach to reduce costs and speed iteration. In its early years, SpaceX assembled experienced talent and built its first operations in a warehouse in El Segundo, California, with Musk personally involved in selecting early employees. The company then pursued rapid development of its first orbital rocket, the Falcon 1, using internal funding, and later shifted toward larger systems supported by NASA programs. This early strategy of integrating critical technologies internally helped SpaceX progress from initial failures to successful orbital launches and set the foundation for later contracts and reusable launch efforts.
