Spanish, also called Castilian, is a Romance language within the Indo-European family. It evolved from Vulgar Latin spoken on the Iberian Peninsula after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and is generally classified within the Ibero-Romance, or West Iberian, group. The language originated in the Kingdom of Castile and developed through contact with other Iberian Romance languages, Arabic, Basque, and earlier Paleohispanic languages. Spanish is now a global language spoken primarily in Spain and Hispanic America, with official status in 21 countries and recognition as one of the six official languages of the United Nations. It is the world's most widely spoken Romance language and has approximately 519 million native speakers and 636 million total speakers, including second-language users.
