Symbiosis is defined as any close, long-term biological interaction between organisms of different species. Historically, the meaning of the term has been debated for about 130 years. Early work by Albert Bernhard Frank (1877) used “symbiosis” in a restricted sense for mutualistic relationships in lichens, while Heinrich Anton de Bary (1878) broadened the definition to “the living together of unlike organisms.” Over time, scientists disagreed on whether symbiosis should include only persistent mutualisms or encompass all long-term interactions (including commensalism and parasitism) while excluding brief interactions such as predation. The debate also influenced how biologists classify symbiotic relationships. Symbiosis can be obligate (one or both partners depend on each other) or facultative (partners can live independently). It can be ectosymbiotic (one partner lives on the host’s surface) or endosymbiotic (one partner lives within the host’s tissues). Beyond mutualism, other interaction types include competition (both reduced fitness), amensalism (one harmed, other unaffected), commensalism (one benefits, other unaffected), and parasitism (one benefits at the host’s expense). These distinctions connect the historical definitional debate to modern ecological and evolutionary interpretations of how species interact over time.
