Titration (also called titrimetry or volumetric analysis) is a common laboratory method used in quantitative chemical analysis to determine the concentration of an identified analyte. In a titration, a reagent known as the titrant (titrator) is prepared as a standard solution with a known concentration and is added in measured volumes to a solution containing the analyte (the titrand). The titrant reacts with the analyte according to a specific chemical reaction, and the analyte concentration is calculated from the measured titration volume. The purpose of titration is to find the endpoint of the reaction—when the amount of titrant added corresponds to the amount of analyte present based on stoichiometry. This is typically detected using an indicator (color change), an instrument such as a pH meter or potentiometer, or other measurement methods depending on the reaction type. By carefully controlling conditions (such as stirring, appropriate solvents, and sometimes buffers or masking agents), titration provides accurate concentration measurements for many kinds of chemical systems.
