An artificial (human-made) satellite is an object—typically a spacecraft—placed into orbit around a celestial body. Most satellites are launched from Earth into space and then maintain or adjust their orbit using propulsion. They commonly include onboard power generation (such as solar panels or radioisotope power systems) and communications equipment (often transponders) to send data to ground stations. Satellites may also be grouped into coordinated systems called constellations. Artificial satellites serve many purposes. Civilian uses include communication relay (TV, telephone, radio, internet), weather and Earth observation (remote sensing of land, oceans, atmosphere, and climate), navigation (e.g., GPS using predictable signal timing and orbital geometry), and scientific research such as space telescopes that observe across the electromagnetic spectrum. Some satellites also support military missions such as reconnaissance, early warning, signals intelligence, and potentially weapon delivery. Crewed orbital platforms like space stations are also considered artificial satellites. Satellites are placed into different orbits depending on mission needs. For example, geostationary satellites remain fixed in the sky relative to a ground point, while Sun-synchronous orbits provide consistent lighting for imaging. The growth in satellite numbers has increased collision risk and space-debris concerns, making safe operations and mitigation important.
