A season is a division of the year based on recurring changes in weather, ecology, and day length in a region. On Earth, the main physical driver is the planet’s axial tilt and related changes in sunlight intensity and angle through the year, which produce opposite seasons in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Additional factors such as ocean proximity, ocean currents, winds, and phenomena like El Niño/ENSO shape how strongly seasons are expressed, including differences between continental and maritime climates and the timing shift known as seasonal lag. Seasons matter because they structure natural cycles: in temperate and polar regions, changing sunlight often leads to plant dormancy and animal hibernation or migration, while in the tropics seasonal variation is often expressed more through wet/dry (monsoon) patterns than through temperature swings. Different cultures and scientific communities define seasons in different ways—commonly using four calendar seasons (spring, summer, autumn/fall, winter), but also using meteorological (temperature-based), astronomical (equinox/solstice-based), ecological (event- or organism-based), and region-specific systems such as two tropical seasons or six-season ecological models. Even beyond nature, seasonal timing can influence agriculture, rituals, and human activities such as historical and military campaigning seasons.
