A graphical user interface (GUI) is a type of user interface that lets people interact with electronic devices using graphical icons and visual indicators rather than typing text commands. GUIs are commonly used instead of text-based interfaces (such as command-line interfaces) because they reduce the steep learning curve associated with memorizing and entering commands. In a GUI, user actions are typically carried out through direct manipulation of on-screen graphical elements. The purpose of a GUI is to make human–machine interaction more efficient and easier to use by presenting information and controls in a visual language. GUI design focuses on usability—improving speed, ease of use, and task support—often using user-centered design methods. GUIs are implemented using interaction devices (e.g., keyboard and pointing devices) and UI components (e.g., windows, icons, menus, and widgets), frequently following the WIMP paradigm (windows, icons, menus, and pointer). Beyond computers, GUIs are also used in many mobile devices and specialized systems such as ATMs, kiosks, and industrial control screens.
