Motivation is an internal state or force that initiates, directs, and sustains goal-directed behavior. It explains why individuals begin, continue, change, or stop an activity at a particular time. Although motivation is not directly observable, it can be inferred from behavior, reported goals and feelings, effort, persistence, and physiological or neurological measures. It is distinct from amotivation, which involves apathy, lack of interest, or resistance to action. Motivation commonly unfolds through two related stages: goal-setting and goal-striving. During goal-setting, a person selects an objective and commits to pursuing it; during goal-striving, they initiate action, invest effort, overcome obstacles, and adjust strategies as needed. Motivational states are characterized by direction, intensity, and persistence: direction identifies the goal, intensity reflects the amount of energy invested, and persistence indicates how long the individual continues. Motivation may be intrinsic, arising from enjoyment or curiosity, or extrinsic, arising from rewards, punishment, recognition, or other external outcomes. It influences learning, work, health, athletic performance, personal development, and decision-making.
