Project Jupyter is an open-source project that develops software, open standards, and services for interactive computing across multiple programming languages. It was spun off from IPython in 2014 and is financially sponsored by the Jupyter Foundation. The name “Jupyter” reflects the three core languages it supports—Julia, Python, and R—and the project’s branding references Galileo’s discovery of Jupiter’s moons. Jupyter’s scope includes language-agnostic interactive computing through notebook-based workflows and related tools. It supports many execution environments (“kernels”) for dozens of languages (including Julia, R, Haskell, Ruby, and Python via the IPython kernel). Major cloud providers and development environments have adopted Jupyter Notebook or derivatives as a frontend interface, and the ecosystem includes tools such as JupyterLab (a more feature-rich interface), JupyterHub (multi-user server support), and Jupyter AI (generative AI features inside notebooks).
