Symbiosis is defined as any close, long-term biological interaction between organisms of different species. In 1879, Heinrich Anton de Bary described it as “the living together of unlike organisms,” though the term has sometimes been used more narrowly to mean persistent mutualism where both partners benefit. Symbiosis can be classified in multiple ways, including obligate versus facultative relationships, ecto- versus endosymbiosis (living on the host’s surface vs. inside its tissues), and interaction outcomes such as competition, amensalism, commensalism, parasitism, and mutualism. A major historical debate concerns what should count as “symbiosis.” For about 130 years, scientists disagreed over whether the term should be restricted to persistent mutualisms only, or broadened to include all long-term interspecies interactions (mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism) while excluding brief interactions like predation. Later proposals, such as Edward Haskell’s integrative approach using “co-actions” (adopted more broadly as “interactions”), helped shape modern biological classification of these relationships.
