Weather is the state of the Earth’s atmosphere at a specific place and time, usually described by factors such as temperature, humidity, cloud cover, and atmospheric stability. It concerns short-term, day-to-day conditions, while climate refers to the long-term averaging of atmospheric conditions over extended periods. Weather is driven by differences in air pressure, temperature, and moisture between locations. These differences arise partly from variations in the Sun’s angle with latitude, which helps explain why polar and tropical air contrast strongly and produce large-scale circulation patterns (such as Hadley, Ferrel, and polar cells) and the jet stream. Instabilities in the jet stream help generate mid-latitude weather systems like extratropical cyclones, while seasonal changes and longer-term climate shifts are influenced by Earth’s tilted axis and changes in orbital parameters over thousands of years.
