The universe is defined as everything that exists— all forms of matter and energy and the structures they form—spanning all of space and time, including what has been, is, and will be. It contains planets, moons, stars, galaxies, and the contents of intergalactic space, and it is often discussed in terms of both physical reality and, in some philosophical views, abstract concepts such as mathematics and logic. In cosmology, the universe is also described by its evolution and large-scale organization. The prevailing Big Bang model explains that the universe began in an extremely hot and dense state and has been expanding for about 13.8 billion years, producing the observable universe (about 93 billion light-years across). On the largest scales, matter is approximately homogeneous and isotropic, while at smaller scales it forms a web of galaxies, clusters, filaments, and voids. The universe’s composition is dominated by dark energy and dark matter, with ordinary (baryonic) matter making up only a small fraction.
