The universe is defined as everything that exists— all forms of matter and energy, and the structures they form—spanning all space and time. It includes objects such as planets, stars, galaxies, and the contents of intergalactic space, and it is often described as the totality of what has been, is, and will be. Some philosophical and scientific views also argue that abstract concepts (like mathematics and logic) may be included in the definition. Modern cosmology describes the universe as expanding for about 13.8 billion years, beginning from an extremely hot, dense early state associated with the Big Bang. The observable universe is limited by the finite speed of light; it is roughly 93 billion light-years in diameter today, while the total size of the universe (finite or infinite) remains unknown. On the largest scales, matter is observed to be broadly uniform and isotropic, while at smaller scales it forms complex structures such as clusters, superclusters, filaments, and voids.
