The Cold War rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union drove rapid advances in spaceflight capability, rooted in the post–World War II ballistic missile and nuclear arms race. As intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) became essential for delivering nuclear payloads, both superpowers recognized that space technology—especially satellites for reconnaissance and strategic signaling—had direct national security value. This link between military capability and space achievement helped turn the “Space Race” into a high-stakes competition for technological superiority and global influence. From 1955 onward, both countries used missile-derived launch systems to reach orbit and demonstrate capability. The USSR’s Sputnik and early human spaceflights (e.g., Vostok) intensified US concerns and led President John F. Kennedy to commit to landing a man on the Moon by the end of the decade. Both sides pursued increasingly powerful launch vehicles and crewed spacecraft, with the US achieving the Moon landing through Saturn V and Apollo 11, while the USSR continued crewed lunar efforts unsuccessfully before shifting focus to space stations and robotic planetary missions. Over time, rivalry eased into cooperation, culminating in the 1972 Apollo–Soyuz Test Project and later joint ISS-era collaboration after the Cold War.
