Definition of weather versus climate

Weather is the state of the Earth’s atmosphere at a specific place and time, typically described by factors such as temperature, humidity, cloud cover, and stability. It concerns short-term, day-to-day conditions like precipitation and wind, and it mainly occurs in the troposphere. Weather is driven by differences in air pressure, temperature, and moisture between locations, which arise from uneven solar heating (including variations in sun angle by latitude) and from large-scale circulation patterns such as the jet stream. Climate refers to the long-term averaging of atmospheric conditions over extended periods. While weather can change rapidly, climate reflects persistent patterns shaped by factors like Earth’s tilt and orbital variations, which alter how much and where solar energy reaches the planet over thousands to hundreds of thousands of years. In short, weather describes what the atmosphere is doing now (or in the near term), while climate describes what it tends to do over long periods.
