Wi‑Fi is a family of wireless networking protocols based on the IEEE 802.11 standards. It enables nearby digital devices to exchange data over radio waves, and it is widely used for local area networking and Internet access. In homes and small offices, Wi‑Fi connects devices through wireless routers and access points; in public places such as coffee shops, hotels, libraries, and airports, it provides wireless Internet access via hotspots. Wi‑Fi’s purpose is to allow compatible devices to network with each other and with wired networks (including the Internet) using common Wi‑Fi standards. Different Wi‑Fi versions (IEEE 802.11 standards) determine key technical characteristics such as radio bands, channelization, maximum range, and achievable speeds. Wi‑Fi is a trademark of the Wi‑Fi Alliance, which restricts the “Wi‑Fi Certified” label to products that pass interoperability certification testing; non-certified devices may still work but are referred to as WLAN rather than “Wi‑Fi Certified.”
