The Wright brothers—Orville and Wilbur—are generally credited with making the world’s first successful controlled, sustained flight of an engine-powered, heavier-than-air aircraft. After years of glider testing and research focused on how to control a flying machine, they developed the Wright Flyer and its flight-control approach, culminating in the first powered flights on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Their breakthrough was not just adding an engine, but creating an effective three-axis control system that let the pilot steer and maintain equilibrium.
