The Wright brothers (Orville and Wilbur) are credited with inventing, building, and flying the world’s first successful airplane, the Wright Flyer. After years of glider testing and research focused on solving the “flying problem,” they developed a practical method of flight control rather than relying mainly on engine power. Their breakthrough was a three-axis control system that let the pilot steer the aircraft and maintain equilibrium, making controlled, sustained powered flight possible. On December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk at Kill Devil Hills, they achieved the first controlled, sustained flights of an engine-powered, heavier-than-air aircraft. After delays and repairs, Orville and Wilbur made multiple short flights from level ground into a headwind, with the first lasting 12 seconds and covering about 120 feet. Although the Flyer was later damaged and never flew again, the flights demonstrated that powered fixed-wing flight could be controlled, and the brothers’ control system became a foundation for airplane design.
